Risk Management: Lessons from the Ocean to the Boardroom
Recently I had the honour to be in a room full of CEOs at one of the leading companies in Germany and the EU to share my perspectives on risk management.
Sitting at that table, the parallels were immediate. Out at Praia do Norte, facing waves the size of buildings, risk is never eliminated. It is assessed, managed, and transformed into opportunity. The same applies in business: uncertainty is unavoidable, but how we prepare, how we react under pressure, and how we align as a team makes the difference between success and failure.
Three Key Frameworks
The session with Basalt AG’s leadership team focused on three core frameworks drawn directly from the practice of professional big wave surfing:
1. Preparation
Every big wave ride begins long before entering the water. Swell data is analysed days in advance. Physical conditioning is continuous. Safety protocols are rehearsed. Equipment is checked and rechecked. Nothing is left to chance because when the moment comes, there is no time to prepare. In business, preparation means anticipating market shifts, stress-testing strategies and building resilience before the storm hits. The leaders who perform best in a crisis are those who prepared for it long before it arrived.
2. Teamwork and Trust
In the ocean, Freddy’s life often depends on the jet ski driver beside him. That relationship is built on absolute trust, clear communication and rehearsed protocols. There is no room for ambiguity. In companies, the same dynamic plays out at every level: trusting leadership and empowering teams to act decisively under pressure. Risk becomes manageable when people move with clarity and confidence together. When trust breaks down, so does performance.
3. Mindset
Fear is natural, whether in front of a 20-metre wall of water or an uncertain market. What matters is channelling that energy into focus and action. Courage is not the absence of fear. It is the decision to move forward despite it. The most experienced big wave surfers in the world still feel fear. The difference is what they do with it.
“It was inspiring to see how open these leaders were to drawing connections between extreme sports and business. Risk, after all, is not something to be avoided. It is the very arena where growth, innovation and transformation happen.”
Why Big Wave Surfing and Business Leadership Connect
The language of performance, risk and resilience transcends industry. Whether you are managing a portfolio of investments, leading a team through organisational change or making split-second decisions in a volatile market, the mental and strategic frameworks required are strikingly similar to those used by elite big wave surfers.
Freddy Olander has spent over 20 years developing and refining these frameworks in some of the most demanding conditions on the planet. The Nazaré Canyon, where Atlantic swells amplify to produce the world’s biggest rideable waves, is one of the most unforgiving performance environments in any sport. The lessons from that environment are directly transferable to the challenges faced by senior leaders across every sector.
The Basalt AG event was one of many corporate keynotes and leadership sessions Freddy has delivered. The response from CEO-level audiences is consistently the same: the frameworks are practical, the stories are compelling, and the connection between ocean performance and business performance is immediate and actionable.
